Odd start to the season for Yorkshire. First game rained off, second game won - putting them top, third game lost - with a first innings total of 96, and now...

Playing Essex, first day; Yorkshire all out for 50, Essex 13 for 3. That's 13 wickets for 63 runs in 26.4 overs. That sounds like a very dodgy pitch and it sounds like any Yorkshire batsman who knows which way up to hold the bat has left.

I’m no expert (football and pulling top quality Totty is my skill) but don’t clubs get reported for preparing shit wickets?

Unlikely to be a draw

Yes, they can be. 21 wickets for the day at the moment. Yorkshire' second innings looking rather better than their first. Yes, a draw is unlikely, unless rain happens, which appears to be extremely unlikely.

Well, rather astonishingly Yorkshire recovered to win. It turns out that in the whole history of the County Championship there have only been five worse first innings totals from which a side has somehow extracted victory.

Yorkshire dismissed Essex for 142 and then scored 329, with a maiden century for 19 year old Harry Brook. Essex needed 238 to win and only managed 146.

The five instances of lower first innings totals are shown in this match report, and the match scoreboard is available via a link.

One of the five lower ones was by Yorkshire against Sussex in Brighton (not Hove) in 1922. Yorkshire scored 42. Only two Sussex bowlers were required and they both took 5 for 20. Sussex were all out for 95. Yorkshire then scored 228, leaving Sussex 176 to win, but they only made 83, with Wilf Rhodes taking 6 for 13.

Earlier that same season, Yorkshire played Sussex in another County Championship game here in Hull. Despite it being a low-scoring game, Yorkshire won by an innings. Sussex scored 95 (again), with Rhodes taking 6 for 43. Yorkshire didn't do much better, racking up 125 for a first innings lead of 30. Sussex's captain Arthur Gilligan (whose brother Alfred was also playing) took 6 for 20. And, speaking of 20, that was exactly what Sussex scored. 20 all out, with Abe Waddington taking 7 for 6.

Something a little off topic to finish; the following link describes a rather amusing but ridiculous run-out in a friendly match between Oxford University and a weakened Surrey team in 1922.

Sure I've read somewhere that if a pitch loses 15 wickets in a day then it's investigated.

Now then...

That wouldn't surprise me.
