When did we last score 5 in an away game?

Whats our biggest ever win on the road?

City's biggest away win since a 5-0 win against Glossop Town on the 16th March 1915 from not 606

I'll look into it. We've often scored 5 away, but I can't remember any of them being 5-0.

Is biggest win biggest margin or most goals for us?

I'll start with league games.

The most we've scored away in the league is six. We beat Rochdale 6-3 in November 1931.

We've scored 5 goals in away games 12 times and 6 once.

02.04.1910 Stockport 1-5 City Jackie Smith 3, Joe Smith, Temple
16.03.1915 Glossop 0-5 City Stevens 2, Halligan 2, Cameron
11.04.1931 Carlisle 1-5 City Mills 3, Dally Duncan 2
21.11.1931 Rochdale 3-6 City Dally Duncan 2, Andy Duncan, Wainscott, Speed, Munnings
10.09.1932 Stockport 3-5 City Wainscott 2, McNaughton, Forward, Gardner
26.10.1946 New Brighton 1-5 City Watson 2, Lester 2, Hassall
15.12.1962 Bristol R 2-5 City Henderson, Chilton, McSeveney, Clarke, Collinson
21.10.1967 Plymouth 2-5 City Houghton, Chilton, Wagstaff, Simpkin, Young
10.11.1984 Orient 4-5 City Flounders 2, Askew, Massey, McEwan
01.03.2003 Carlisle 1-5 City Elliott 2, Walters 2, Forrester
04.10.2003 Northampton 1-5 City Elliott, Allsopp, Price, Burgess, Forrester
05.02.2011 Scunthorpe 1-5 City Fryatt 3, McLean 2
10.04.2018 Burton A 0-5 City Grosicki 2, Wilson, Meyler, Keane

That's 6-3 once, 5-0 twice, 5-1 six times, 5-2 twice, and 5-3 and 5-4 once each.

In the FA Cup, we've had these:

26.11.1932 FA Cup Stalybridge 2-8 City Wainscott 4, McNaughton, Forward, Sargeant, Hill
18.01.1954 FA Cup Brentford 2-5 City Horton 2, Crosbie 2, Ackerman
17.11.2001 FA Cup Northwich 2-5 City Johnsson, Matthews, Dudfield, Alexander, OG

So, our best away win is the 8-2 against Stalybridge in the FA Cup. The best league one... well, I'd make goals scored the first criterion, but others may prefer margin of victory. So 6-3 or 5-0, take your pick.

On the list above, it works out that we've scored 5+ away in the league (very) roughly once every 9 years. However, in 1931 and 2003, we did it twice. In 1932 there were also two occurrences, but one was in the FA Cup.

Four players have scored hat-tricks in these games and several players have scored in multiple 5+ away games:

Hat-trick or better

4 Russell Wainscott
3 Jackie Smith, Paddy Mills, Matty Fryatt

Most goals in such games

7 (1+2+4) Russell Wainscott
4 (2+2) Dally Duncan
3 Jackie Smith
3 Paddy Mills
3 Matty Fryatt
3 (2+1) Stuart Elliott
2 Sammy Stevens
2 BIlly Halligan
2 (1+1) Ken McNaughton
2 (1+1) Fred Forward
2 Arthur Watson
2 Ben Lester
2 Ken Horton
2 Bob Crosbie
2 (1+1) Chris Chilton
2 Andy Flounders
2 (1+1) Jamie Forrester
2 Jonathan Walters
2 Aaron McLean
2 Kamil Grosicki

Hope that'll do.

i would have sworn we beat Northampton away 6-1

I got thrown out before the game started for foolish behaviour and bought a home ticket from a portacabin and went in their end sitting next to the 20 or so Northampton fans who were singing

trying not to celebrate not once but 5 (or6?) times wasn't easy
I think I even managed to film it for my "website"

I did check a load of teams for "aggregate" scores in a season last night (might post it at some point) and Northampton were one team I checked. In 2003-4, we beat Kidderminster 6-1 at home on September 27th, beat Swansea 1-0 at home on the Tuesday, then beat Northampton 5-1 away the following Saturday, so that may well have put a 6-1 win and a Northampton away into the same cubby hole in your brainbox. I know it was one of the things I had to check.

Results against Northampton:

When we beat Forest 2-0 on February 10th, it was the first time we'd been 2-0 up at halftime in an away league game for four years.

Since then, we were 2-0 up at halftime when we beat Ipswich 3-0 away on March 13th, and 2-0 up at halftime in the 5-0 win at Burton on April 10th

How many away fans were at Glossop in 1915? Did away attendances exist in this era?

Glossop had been in the top league for around 15 years before that season.

Before the mid-1920s, the gates for City games in the books I have are given in thousands. The gate for the Glossop game is listed as 500, the same as the season before. These were the last two seasons that Glossop played in the league because they'd finished last before the war and therefore had to apply for re-election, and they were not re-elected. It may be that one or other of the gates of 500 in our last two games at Glossop was the smallest crowd ever to watch a Hull City league game.

On the topic of away fans, I have no idea. I don't even know where the recent away fan figures can be found.

I wasn't expecting an update to the 5+ away scores list quite so soon. Certainly not after the very next away game!

For a change, it hasn't been an away win, but our first ever 5-5 draw.

21.04.2018 Bristol C 5-5 City Wilson 2, Hernandez, Campbell, OG

Not the first time it's happened twice in a year, but certainly the first time for twice in a season and twice in a month, and definitely the first time in consecutive away games.

And Wilson joins some illustrious names on three goals in such games.
