CITY PLAYERS SCORING SIX OR MORE TIMES BEFORE OCTOBER

Following on from Bowen scoring 7 goals before October, I've had a trawl through history to see who else has managed a decent haul before October. Yes, my intentions of getting everything nicely computerised to make these investigations far quicker has still not got further than the seed tray at the wrong end of my to-do list. One day. In the meantime, it's quite possible there might be errors, but let's overlook them for now.

It soon became clear that I needed to use 6 goals as the minimum qualification. Data came from (1) the Chris Elton book (till 1989), (2) the Mike Peterson book (to 1999), and (3) Soccerbase (the remainder)

Reaching 6 or more goals before October for City has now been achieved 32 times by 27 City players.

Four players have managed it more than once, these being
3 Chilton
2 Carter, Bradbury, Houghton

Until the introduction of the League Cup (LC), all players reached the target in league games only. The next 14 occurrences included League Cup games, whether the players scored in their League Cup games or not. One player, Stuart Elliott, played and scored in one Football League Trophy (FLT) game, which I've included. He would have made the mark without that game. Bowen is the first qualifier since Bradbury in 1958 to have played only league games.

The first player to do it was Jack Smith in 1909. Only one player has managed double figures before October.

Things

1. The only decade nobody did it was the 1980s, which is a little surprising as we had four very good seasons during that decade (I've mentioned before that during that four year period, along with Liverpool and Wimbledon, we accumulated more points than any other teams in the league).

2. There have been four seasons in which two or more players reached the target:

2a. In 1950, Carter scored 11 in 10 and Ackerman 8 in 11.

2b. In 1956, Bradbury scored 7 in 13 and Mortenson 6 in 8.

2c. In 1961, Chilton scored 7 in 13 and Crickmore 6 in 13.

2d. In 1966, Wagstaff scored 7 in 13 while Chilton and Houghton both scored 6 in 13.

3. In 1951, Gerrie scored 2 hat-tricks while accumulating 8 in 10 games.

4. In 1954, Crosbie scored 6 in 10, including 4 in one game.

5. In 1993, Windass scored 9 in 11, including hat-tricks on consecutive Saturdays (not to mention a goal on the intervening Tuesday).

6. The longest gaps between occurrences were 17 years from 1911 to 1928 (though there was a war in the gap), 13 years from 2004 to 2017, 12 years from 1966 to 1978 and 1978 to 1990, and 10 years from 1938 to 1948 (another war in that gap).

7. The most consecutive seasons with occurrences were 4 (1948-9-50-1), 3 (1931-2-3), 2 (1937-8, 1961-2, 1965-6, 2003-4).

8. Of the 32 occurrences, exactly half happened in the 19 years from 1948 to 1966 inclusive.

9. In 2016-17, Robert Snodgrass scored 7 goals before October, but three were for Scotland against Malta. There may be other similar instances.

I was asked to see how John McSeveney got on with this; his tallies by season were: 61:4, 62:5, 63:3, 64:4. So just under the radar.

Following this, and given that Harry Kane scored 13 goals for Spurs in September for Spurs, I'm thinking of seeing which City players scored most goals in a calendar month. I know already of one month in which a player scored 12.
