Unemployed levels are low. Under-employed levels in the UK are huge. Every worker in France and Germany could take Friday off work, move to a 4 day week and still their productivity would be higher than the UK's.

The only Western country where hand car washes are still prevalent.

Once the EU subsidies and government grants go, that keep the likes of Airbus in the UK, this will drop further. Not one serious politician of left or right has adequately addressed this.

No wonder no one wants to come here.

2005 Labour got 355 seats from 35.2 % of the vote on a 62.4% turnout. 2015 Tories got 331 seats from 36.9% of the vote on a 661% turnout. Left wing fannies moan the second one is sooooo unfair and we need electoral reform. But didn't utter a peep, about the first one.

You have told us they are all here to work. The Europeans are but the arrivals from Somalia, Sudan andbthe Middle East are not like tbe Windrush generation.

If France is such a great place to get ahead why are there so many French people in London that only 4 cities in France have a higher population?

There are around twice as many Brits living in France as there are French living in Britain...

Not sure on your figures. How many French live permanently in London? 100k or so? Doesn't even put the number of London based French amongst the top 25 cities in France.

No there aren't twice as many Brits living in France compared to French here.

Those that are asylum seekers aren't allowed to work until they are given settled status.

They take our jobs. They take our benefits. Yet lots work and pay taxes and send their kids to school.

For those from poor countries this place is nirvana - if you can shrug off a bit of racism - but to think we should all say that it's wonderful full stop is ridiculous. Unfortunately we are giving up some of the best of Britain and letting a lot of the shit ooze out.

Some French people don't like their higher taxation. Their natural home - not too far away - is the UK. And if the railways are incredibly expensive they don't use the train very often.

the last refuge of scoundrels...

The score gets better, argue that the scoring mechanism is wrong.

The article eats its own exhaust fumes - the so-called under-employed aka those no longer looking for work, taking a break to raise kids, working part-time etc. has remained static for over two decades.

ergo all things being the same unemployment has gone down to record levels.

You are acting like an ideologically possessed person Candice when you refuse to accept that things are getting better.

Finally Hans Roslings (RIP) Book - Factfulness has been released and comes with no better recommendation than Mr Gates.

you should try reading it to understand why you are so stuck in your doom and gloom

You have ignored the large number of people who can't get jobs in the trades that have been ushered into Self Employment. Many of these struggle to survive. Their numbers are now subsumed into the ranks of the employed.

If Mr Gates, whose monopoly in computing made him fabulously wealthy likes this book that's fine. If he's happy philanthropising that is also good. You don't question that he amassed such a huge fortune, but virtue signal his spending some of it on good causes. People who stuffed kids up chimneys back in the day built town halls and even worker's housing. Some thing never change.

Building enough houses is a problem because of a lack of brickies etc. We do have lots of people with high grades in Media Studies, Golf Course Management, Spice Girlology...

I blame the teachers.

Everyone should like higher taxation. So socialists tell us.

Me too! I remember when I was at grammar school our brickies etc course was really highly thought of. And the SecMods were turning out so many highly skilled people such as brickies etc that you couldn't leave a plot of land vacant for a week without a brand new house appearing.

And we still build them one brick at a time. No wonder there's a shortage of housing.

As for all these courses you hate, what the fuck else can you do with kids who aren't academic but have to stay on at school? We're not Europeans are we?

Anyway, great to get through a post without having to worry about Chairman Mao!
