Majority of people clearing the beaches and coves near me are blue collar workers and families, who don't want the region destroyed for their children and grandchildren.
The middle classes aren't so reliant on the sea and the industry related to it and have the finances to move elsewhere.

Not bothering to clean your own backyard, because someone else's is worse, is hardly the way forward.

Bringing in ever more rules, regulations and restrictions in places which contribute relatively little towards the problemwhilst those churning out thousands of times more pollution carry on regardless isn't the way forward either. Compare the amount of plastic whichnis dumped into the ocean via the Thames to the Yangtse and Yellow river.

2005 Labour got 355 seats from 35.2 % of the vote on a 62.4% turnout. 2015 Tories got 331 seats from 36.9% of the vote on a 661% turnout. Left wing fannies moan the second one is sooooo unfair and we need electoral reform. But didn't utter a peep, about the first one.

It's a stupid mindset. Don't do anything because so many are doing worse?

If the UK, EU and US start doing something, they can pressure Asia to follow.

There was someone on TV recently on about how we should do this that and the other about one form of pollution. About 75 tons a year from the Thames and 150,000 tons from the Yangste. Us doing something will have little effect on things. When the nasty capitalists of the USA there were constant calls from greens about them ruining the planet. Now it is China they aren't so vocal.

It's a UK, US and EU directive. The straws are just a small part of it.

The boy in Manchester who is explained why he can't have a plastic straw with his Umbongo, could grow up to be the businessman who starts a company that clears the Nile Delta of poisonous plastic.

Small steps.

A better course of action would be to execute litterers.

So glad you are not in charge of anything meaningful. You would be the surgeon manicuring the nails of a woman with a severed arm. The UN millennium goals project and our progress over the last two centuries has proven some simple principles.

1) Do Pareto analysis on the worlds problems and focus on them from the biggest harms and most frequent occurrences first then work downwards towards the trivial
2) place effort directly at the source of the harm and work there don’t do ‘mile-wide inch, inch deep stuff’ (hence the UK banning straws comment)
3) amongst other things - it turns out that modernising and growing economies is tbe first thing to do... it allows societies to take care of basic needs and they can start to tackle higher order issues like pollution as they get wealthier.
4) infant mortality
5) rights and education for women
6) contraception
7) access to capital to make purchases that improve personal / family productivity

Paper straws in hoxton won’t do shit except empty virtue signalling

That will balance out the millions of tons of stuff floating down the Asian rivers

Like most people in our parts of the planet I don’t know ANYONE who does or would do such a thing. What does wash up on our shores has more than likely originated elsewhere.

Your post is the silly petulant post of a passive aggressive teenager who has found out their world view is wrong.

Once more Tip for a stressless life: Don’t hold opinions for which you don’t have strong supporting facts... (AND let’s add logic too eh?).

Let’s stop being sheep like westerners agonising about shit that is not revelant to us and focus instead on important things in our manor that are very likely not the things the planet needs to be worrying about.

Example my local Mayor has just been spouting about city pollution and banking diesel cars earlier with Sadiq Can’t and various other handwringers yet according to earthsense polution for the whole city pollution is a just 2 (low) out of 6.... About time we started get rational leaders for a change.

You've obviously never been involved in a beach and cove clean.

Try coming down from the pulpit once in a while.

We used to have raw shit on our beaches until the EU made us clean it up. Are you saying that was other people's shit?
