Sanity 0 Feelings 1

https://freespeechoverfeelings.wordpress. com/2017/12/31/comedy-on-trial-the-count- dankula-case/

"In the Spring of 2016, one Scottish lad named Mark Meechan (aka Count Dankula) got an the idea to use his girlfriend’s sickeningly cute pug (Buddha) to annoy her. Over several weeks he trained the dog and on April 11, uploaded a video that would gain him and the issue of free speech in Scotland international attention. The video was titled “M8 Yer Dugs A Nazi”, and showed Buddha reacting to Meechan saying “Gas the Jews” and raising his paw to “Seig Heil”, along with showing Buddha watching clips of Hitler’s speeches. While not everyone’s cup of tea humor wise, many (including myself) found it hilarious and just the right mix of dark and cute humor. Things took a turn for the worse when Meechan was taken into custody on the charge of “communicating material which would cause fear and alarm, and stir up hatred on religious grounds.” In short, Meechan is facing fines and/or a year in prison for hate speech if he is found guilty. This case sets a dangerous precedent for free speech in the U.K. In 2017, the British police force is more focused on pursuing those who commit thought crime online and virtue signaling on their twitter accounts than catching returning ISIS terrorists and stopping the radicalization of others. The mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has said that it’s impossible to stop all crime and that terrorism is now “part and parcel” of big city life. This is a man who is spending 1.7 million pounds on an online abuse task force while knife crime, terrorism, and sexual assaults are continuing to rise throughout the city and country as a whole. These online tasks forces are being set up in police stations all over the country, so who knows where this will end. Meechan issued an apology and disclaimer saying that he doesn’t support Nazism, Antisemitism, or the dreaded alt-right. Over the past year and a half, Meechan has had his trial delayed over and over to the point where he would have been free by now if he were sent to jail right after his arrest. While appearing in court, Meechan has also been waging a one man shit-posting campaign under his YouTube moniker of Count Dankula to comically skewer the illiberal “progressives”, alt-right, and communists. All of his videos are a great source of joy for myself and his 70,000 plus subscribers on YouTube. Dankula has been mentioned by Alex Jones of Info Wars and Sargon of Akkad, and has even appeared in Sargon’s recent live version of “This Week in Stupid.” Meechan has also released several videos including “The 14 Woofs”, which seems to be attempts to get himself put in jail. At the end of the day, whether you find Meechan’s jokes offensive or not, he has as much of a right to say them as the people who get offended to screech about their offense. The U.K. lacks a First Amendment like protection of free speech, and this is why Meechan is on trial. Meechan is a modern day Lenny Bruce, another man who was maligned in his day by the moral handwringers, who constantly seeks to find offense in everything. Meechan’s trial is set to start again on January 5th, and I wish the man the best of luck, both as a fan and avid support of free speech and the right to offend and be offended. Meechan has joked about his plan to write a book entitled “My Struggle” if convicted and sent to jail, but I believe a book like that would be a key piece of free speech literature that should be read by all."

You couldnt make it up. Voltaire would be disgusted. Orwell would be disgusted.

So, make fun of Nazis and you go to jail. Adolph would be delighted.

Things like this are not really about how an intelligent and mature libertarian reacts to them, is it? After "'til death do us part" it became OK again to call Blacks 'coons'. People could then say 'it's on the tele'. "Gas the Jews" really isn't something that people joke about, is it?

It isn't, but that's just the likes of me and you. Is being "grossly offensive" now a crime? If so, I can list dozens who qualify. Is telling a bad joke a crime? A problem in the current age is that intent is no longer relevant, and certain factions will assign the worst possible intent, despite any and all evidence to the contrary (I can give you examples of that). David Baddiel is Jewish and he thinks it was about mocking the Nazis, which shouldn't be illegal. It's a slippery slope.

Saying 'Gas the Jews' and meaning it, is what would be prosecuted (rightly) under the hate crime act. Teaching a dog to sieg heil when commanded to 'Gas the Jews' as a joke/wind-up is clearly a different context and shouldn't have been prosecuted under a hate crime act.

The fact that actions can now be tacked on to hazy and relatively under-defined laws is worrying. What on earth were the police and CPS thinking on this (and the magistrates/jury on the case). Indeed, a worrying precedent.

Gas the Jews, 20 times, should be nowhere near a "joke". Does that make me A SJW?

Yes and it shows a lack of critical reasoning ability.

Can’t take a joke?

If the IRA hadn't blown up Manchester it would still be a shitheap. I don't hear many words of thanks from you to the IRA.
