If you really want a Canada going to hell in a handcart Topic, you should focus on the fact that Canadians now have the highest level of household debt in the world, partly as a result of the huge housing bubble, whose inflation pumping was started by 'our' very own Mark Carney.

I stopped expecting people to actually read this thread some time back. I'm just treating it as a storage area nowadays. It helps stop me posting the stuff elsewhere. I'm open to other people adding to it.

What you have to remember is that most people don't have proper opinions, they have emotive responses influenced by their own fears and ignorance. Social media and modern climate has made this worse and made the divisions between social productivity wider.

On one hand, the Canadian prime minister is suggesting words change to include women better, whilst his country is selling weapons to Saudi Arabia, whilst on the other, one man has invested his billions to send rockets into space for a fraction of what national government space agencies spent.

The extremes are mirroring life. Spend fours years at university examining Victorian texts for racist undertones and you'll find it, but dont expect to be able to afford a house off the back of what you've learned. Times have changed.

Informed opinion is only half the story. You also have to account for the paradigm lens that people view the world. I was with a mate yesterday who thinks Jacob Reed Mogg is ‘far right’. You can only be looking through a leftist agenda to equate JRM to Richard Spencer, Adolf Hitler and General Pinochet.

Right of centre - yes

Far right ??

Social media, due to the time spend on it, has become echo chamber-like and people no longer have the other inputs with which to form a balanced view of the world.

Some people on here are definitely suffering from this.

I am almost slap bang in the centre of left / right on political compass but for example on here I feel like outlier.

Jacob Mogg is a nasty Rightist, with Catholic overtones. He is not a Pinochet because he doesn't need to be. You centrists, as you self-identify, love him. He would become our most right-wing PM if the worst happens.

I don't know if you actually use social media. I only use Twitter, but I come across enough contrary opinions in a day that you wouldn't get with your self-selected chums.

You really are an arrogant cunt. You seem to consider yourself the most widely read news sampler on the planet and think that nobody you disagree with has any justification for their opinions. Your jargon filled posts don't impress me at all as you often contradict your previous posts, depending on what you want to attack. Still, most people have given up altogether.

After that post I rest my case.

I don’t support JRM but I take issue with idiots who consider him far right.

He may well be the UK’s most right PM. Just as Labour are taking a shift to the left it’s probably understandable that the tories have an equal and opposite reaction

Graham Green wrote the brilliant "Our Man in Havana".

"Our Man in Ottawa" just doesn't cut is as any sort of alternative. In fact it is less interesting than "Tales of Chocolate Speedboat Captains" or "What the Soviets did Worse".

Just saying!

Interesting video TOP. He didn't mention increasing taxes on the rich to pay for the soldiers' pensions, I wonder why.

Before Canada went to hell in a handcart it was the type of country that sent tanks in to try and turn a cemetery into a golf course.

Trudeau and Macron are just Blairs of today - both economically right, but get away with it by pandering to the latest fads - racism, sensitivity, gender, having a wife old enough to be his grandmother etc.

As bad as the UK's economic growth is being portrayed as, it's only 0.2 of the total percentage less than France's - 1.9 vs 1.7 - hardly a huge difference for an estimate (Germany at 2.2). India and China's are expected to grow by 10%, so the differences between the big EU economies are small and not worth worrying about on that scale.
